25 Years Above the Clouds: Oliver Krautter on Leadership, Change & the Human Side of Air Freigh

From fax machines to real-time logistics, Oliver Krautter reflects on 25 years in air freight, the power of relationships, digital transformation, and why people will always remain at the heart of logistics.

Oliver Krautter, Head of Airfreight Germany

Q: 25 years in air freight – biggest change?

OK: When I started at QCS, air freight was much more manual—phone calls, faxes, and piles of paperwork. Today, it’s data-driven, automated, and globally connected in real time. Yet, despite all the technology, the core challenge hasn’t changed: getting cargo from A to B efficiently, safely, and on time.

Q: What still motivates you every morning?

OK: It’s the people. I’m motivated by my team, our clients, and the thrill of solving complex logistics puzzles. Every day brings a new challenge, and I love seeing how the right solution can make someone’s day—or even their business—run smoother.

Q: Speed vs. relationships – which wins?

OK: Speed is crucial in our business, but relationships always win in the long run. Deals come and go, but trust, reliability, and mutual respect build careers and companies that last decades.

Q: Biggest career-impacting decision or moment?

OK: There’s one clear moment: deciding to embrace digital transformation early in my career. It was a risk, but investing in technology and process improvement set the stage for growth and opened doors I couldn’t have imagined.

Q: Advice to younger Oliver at QCS?

OK: Be curious, ask more questions, and don’t be afraid to challenge the status quo. Also, never underestimate the value of listening—your career will benefit more from hearing than talking.

Q: Staying calm under pressure?

OK: Preparation and perspective. I focus on what I can control, prioritize the urgent from the important, and trust the team. A calm mindset is contagious—especially when everything moves at full speed.

Q: Turning 50 – has perspective changed?

OK: Absolutely. I care less about proving myself and more about creating meaningful impact. I value mentorship, long-term vision, and balancing business with life. Milestones like 50 remind you what truly matters.

Q: In a world of AI and automation, what remains irreplaceable?

OK: Human judgment. Relationships, empathy, creativity, and the ability to navigate unexpected challenges can’t be fully automated. Technology enhances logistics, but people remain at the heart of it

Q: What makes a business partnership truly long-term?

OK: Mutual respect, shared values, transparency, and the willingness to invest in each other’s success. A strong partnership survives challenges because both sides see the bigger picture beyond immediate gains.

Q: One thought over a morning espresso?

OK: “Focus on the small wins every day-they compound into something extraordinary over time.”
